Liturgical and devotional use
Saint Anthony the Abbot is the patron of domestic animals and livestock farmers: his statue is found in rural churches, country chapels and shrines dedicated to him, particularly in regions with an agricultural tradition. The feast of 17 January, with the traditional blessing of animals, is the most solemn occasion for displaying this statue in the sanctuary. The pig at his feet and the bell make the saint's iconography immediately recognisable even to those unfamiliar with it.
