Liturgical use

The cowl is the choir habit par excellence of Benedictine monks: worn over the ordinary habit during the Liturgy of the Hours, the conventual Holy Mass and solemn celebrations, it clothes the monk with the outward sign of his belonging to the community and to the Rule of Saint Benedict.
